The town of Whangamata sits on the southeast coast of the Coromandel Peninsula in the North Island and is recognised as one of the most popular beach resorts in New Zealand. Only 2hrs from Auckland, Whangamata has become the chosen holiday destination for many New Zealand and overseas visitors.
The town has two ocean beaches, both of which are extremely safe for swimming and surfing. The beach itself is graced with a number of off-shore islands. Hauturu or Clark Island is accessible by wading at low tide and is popular in summer months for rock-pool fossickers and kayakers. There is a safe boating harbour at the North end of the town and another estuary at the South end. Both the harbour and estuary provide good swimming for families. 15 minutes drive south of Whangamata is the quietly popular beach Whiritoa. Other beaches just north of Whangamata are Onemana and Opoutere.
Surfing, Fishing, Diving, Cruising, Game Fishing, Rock Fishing, Kayaking, Bush Walks, Scenic Walks, Exploring, Adventure Tours, Mountain Biking, Tramping, Golfing and more are all available in Whangamata. The town is well equipped with a number of clubs, restaurants and cafes to cater for visitors and locals alike.
Whangamata's permanent population of 5,000 normally doubles at weekends and more than quadruples during the peak holiday season. This holiday spot is set to grow in the coming years as its popularity increases.
